This is a really fantastic editorial by a guy writing for Bay Windows talking about some of the people he witnessed in the Pru during Anime Boston being dicks to the attendees simply because they’re nerds, and how it always seems just fine to be an individual provided that individualism still fits within societal expectations for “normal.” I can’t tell you how happy it makes me feel to read an article like this, how validated I feel, how much less ashamed I feel about liking the things that I like. This is beautiful.
Wow, I really don’t know where to begin here, but I really do feel it’s time for me to speak out about this since there has been some extreme mass confusion all over the Internet. I’ll do my best best to explain a lot of the behind the scenes information dealing with Nyan Cat, the people involved, and the accusations in this thread.
First of all, yes I am the original creator of the Nyan Cat Pop Tart Cat GIF animation. Originally, it was just meant to be a cute little animation on my website with no music. On April 5th, Saraj00n ( http://www.youtube.com/user/saraj00n ) took @Daniwell_Aidn’s UTAU cover “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya” ( http://www.nicomimi.net/play/sm13455867 ) and put the two together into one Youtube video. The Internet took over. The meme was born.
A short time later Nyan.cat appeared. It was created by @huy and was basically the same thing as the video but with a Twitter timer. IIRC, it didn’t initially have credit to any of the original artists behind it and therefore many people thought @huy created it. After talking to him on Twitter, he was able to put crediting links up, but many people still didn’t read them and would praise him for creating the meme. He’d never really deny or claim anything, and I believe he would reply in a manner that subtly implied ownership .
A while after that, my crediting link, which was named “Original GIF” was changed to “Nyancat’s cousin”, but it was still my unaltered image on his site. This really was off to me but eventually I got him to change it back. It made it sound like he had the original, and the “cousin” was some lesser-made fan art or something.
I later received an e-mail from @huy asking if it’d be okay to call me on my cell phone mentioning that he had an idea to create an iPhone app which included in-app purchases with my image. By then, I was already getting started on my own free Nyan Cat iPhone game so when he called me I asked him if he’d like to join our team and release the app together so there wouldn’t be two apps in the iPhone store with the promise of shared royalties if we chose to add items to purchase. He seemed extremely reluctant on the idea and in the end mentioned wanting to do this himself and have complete control over it. I told him I wouldn’t agree to anything right away, and after the phone call I sent him an e-mail reiterating our phone conversation, telling him we’d love to have him on our team.
The next day he replied stating he did not want to form a partnership and that he would be going ahead with his own plans without me. With that news he changed Nyan Cat to Toast Cat, which prompted a flood of people asking ME why I had changed cats on the website. It was irritating and insulting.
Now it seems he is listing the original three minds behind Nyancat as “inspiration” behind his creation of “Nyan Cat”, while trying to sound humble, even going as far as to say he will be evolving the meme on his own with different variations. I don’t feel that’s right on many levels and it’s downright disrespectful. He isn’t trying to evolve a meme(a meme he didn’t create), he’s just covering his ass because I ultimately didn’t give my approval. The only thing he succeeds at is getting his hands on a .cat website to fully exploit things in his favor.
A little over a week ago, I launched a site called NON-STOP NYAN CAT!. If you haven’t seen it, take a few minutes, or a few hours,…
THIS IS IMPORTANT GUYS.
DO NOT BELIEVE HIS POISONOUS LIES, DO NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED HIS “HUMBLE” LETTER. THIS MAN IS SINGLE HANDEDLY STEALING THE WORK OF OTHERS! The ORIGINAL creator of this trend has been PRGUITARMAN and his own means. We have witnesses of the creation of this meme, while this guy [HUY] leeches off on THE FANS!
Now, what Huy is doing isn’t merely a PARODY, he is taking straight out the same deal and the same creation with a slight change [BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOW TOAST CAT IS A BETTER MEME, RIGHT?] and using this to boost awareness of his website… What for? WHO KNOWS! But if something is popular, theres money to make… And we live in a Web 2.0 kind of age… Can you see how he could easily make money off something he doesnt owns?
Sure, he credits PRguitarman, but he CLAIMS ownership of the Meme [Or at least of NyanCat] for himself [On a Tweet he mentions “@PRguitarman @cr3 @coeurdartichauthttp://nyan.cat is derivative work. We’re all part of making the meme more popular.” but is that really true when you monopolize the website or resources from it?] Think about it, would you like someone else to be in control of something you created without a previous agreement… Changing the original source to make it a Parody only add Insult to the Injury.
Please Reblog to create a conscience of this! If anything, think for original content and how easily it can be plagiarized… There are risks and popularity is dangerous, but without it we wouldn’t be able to see or expand our creative minds.
